A Journey to Remember, Discovering Zimbabwe and Myself

There’s a proverb that says, “When you haven’t traveled, you haven’t seen.” My recent trip to Zimbabwe to attend the Southern Africa Youth Forum brought this saying to life a journey of discovery, new experiences, a wealth of knowledge, and unforgettable moments. This travel experience will forever hold a special place in my heart.

Several moments stood out during this trip, but I’ll focus on a couple that truly shaped my experience. For quite some time, I have been working closely with politicians, a world that is structured and often formal. However, Zimbabwe offered a different environment one that was radical and energetic. Being surrounded by activists in Zimbabwe ignited a hidden fire within me. Suddenly, I felt a powerful connection to the cause, a renewed sense of purpose that I hadn’t fully embraced before.

One of the most unforgettable moments of the trip happened on the third day when we embarked on a field tour. Initially, I was skeptical and not particularly enthusiastic. I even considered joining another group that was going somewhere else, but space was limited, so I had no choice but to go with the main group. Little did I know, this decision would lead to one of the most inspiring experiences of my life.

As we arrived at our first stop, we gathered to hear a few remarks from the organizers and were introduced to our tour guide, a young man whose presence was as striking as his attire.

As soon as he began speaking, I was captivated. His articulation and confidence were remarkable. He narrated events that took place long before he was born with such vividness and passion that it felt as if he had witnessed them firsthand. His storytelling was as sweet as honey, drawing me to the front of the group, eager to absorb every word.

This young guide reminded me that success doesn’t know age and doesn’t have an owner. With effort and dedication, anyone can shine in their corner of the world. At just 23 years old, he possessed a wealth of knowledge and wisdom beyond his years. He preferred not to discuss his age, perhaps to avoid intimidation, but his impact was undeniable.

By the end of the tour, I couldn’t resist congratulating him and taking a photo together. He truly made my day, transforming my initial skepticism into pure excitement. Meeting him was a highlight of my trip; his story and confidence left me deeply motivated to excel in my own work, to become the best version of myself.

My journey to Zimbabwe was more than just a trip; it was an awakening.

It taught me about the power of new experiences and the importance of embracing one’s true self. As I reflect on this adventure, I am filled with gratitude for the people I met and the lessons I learned. This trip was a reminder that the world is vast and full of opportunities, waiting for us to explore and discover. I’m eager to take this newfound energy and apply it to my work, striving to shine brightly in my own corner, just as that young man did in his.
